IRS Tax Form 1098-E
Overview
If a student made payments on federal, institutional, and/or private student loans that total $600 or more paid toward interest during a calendar year, the student may be eligible to deduct a portion of the interest paid on their federal tax return.
The student’s student loan servicer (the entity the student makes loan payments to) will provide the student with a 1098-E if the interest paid to them during that year equals or exceeds $600.00.
The student’s servicer may send the 1098-E via U.S. Postal Service or electronically.
