This month’s issue of Florida CPA Today features UF Controller Alan West, who was recently installed as chair of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA). West is the first chair of the FICPA to come from higher education.

As UF employees, we are all responsible for safeguarding the University’s valuable financial resources. Every member of the University community has the responsibility to report any actions or activities of concern.

Applications to establish or adjust Material & Supply Fees and Equipment Use Fees for the Spring 2018 Term are now being accepted. All departmental requests should be submitted no later than Tuesday, September 5, 2017 and Dean’s approvals by Tuesday, September 12, 2017.

The University has calculated the new proposed pooled fringe rates for fiscal year 2017-18 and has submitted them to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Although we do not expect any objections, the proposed rates are subject to DHHS approval and should be used with that understanding in your planning for fiscal year 2017-18. The rates, when approved, will be effective July 1, 2017.

The 2016-17 fiscal year ends on June 30, 2017. The scheduled date for closing the General Ledger for the 2017 fiscal year is Thursday, July 13,
2017.

The following is a new policy for employee reimbursements related to the existing University Disbursements directives. The goal of this policy is to better clarify the University’s guidelines for other employee reimbursements – those that do not involve travel or business hosting.

A Schedule of Paydays and Critical Dates for Fiscal Year 2017-2018 can be accessed on the Payroll and Tax Services, Finance and Accounting website. The schedule includes Time and Labor deadlines as well as the Human Resource office’s deadlines to assure that all supporting documents are received in time for approval for the next payday.

A federal court issued a nationwide injunction blocking the enforcement of the new Department of Labor overtime rule that increased the minimum salary threshold for exempt status to $47,476. Prior to the injunction, this rule was set to be effective December 1
