UF implemented a FICA Alternative Plan (FICALT) with the February 3, 2006 paycheck (for the pay period ending January 26, 2006 related to wages paid to OPS Non-Students from certain sources. (See DDD at http://www.admin.ufl.edu/ddd/default.asp?doc=11.7.1876.12) Under this plan, neither the employee nor the employer is required to contribute to Social Security.

Charges before July 1, 2007:

The department is charged a monthly FICA ALT assessment of 6.2% on the first of each month, on the applicable salaries in the previous month. This charge appears as a journal entry to account 819000 as shown on the Departmental report below: In the APPROP ledger group this maps to budgetary account 700000.

The UF_GL_FICA_CHARGE_QUERY may be generated to provide the employee level detail behind the assessment. The navigation to run the Query is PeopleSoft -> Financial PeopleTools -> Reporting Tools -> Query -> Query Viewer.

Below is a screen shot of a sample query for the January 2006 (Accounting Period 7) payroll detail for the assessment that appears on the February Departmental Report. The column, Employee FICALT 7.5% is the amount paid by the employee. Employer FICALT 6.2% is the amount charged to the department, the sum of which, (31.47 in this example) is on the departmental report posted to account 819000.

FICALT charges are moved from 700000 budget line to 600000 budget line in response to the campus community. This charge now appears as a journal entry to account 819000 as shown on the Departmental report below: In the APPROP ledger group this maps to budgetary account 600000.

Charges for FICALT moved to the current month: The department is charged a monthly FICA ALT assessment of 6.2% as of the last day of each month, on the applicable salaries within the same month. This charge appears as a journal entry to account 819000 as shown on the departmental report below: In the APPROP ledger group this maps to budgetary account 600000.

You will notice there are two entries for FICALT, the one dated 06/01/09 is for May salaries and the one dated 06/30/09 is for June. All subsequent FICALT charges will be as of the last day of the month for that month.
